Packing Tips for Weekend Trips | Episode |

March 14, 2012

When you have to travel light, every little inch counts. Sally shares some of her tips and tricks for packing a carry-on suitcase.

SPRING BREAK '12 UPDATE - thought I'd repost this video this week, while many of us are packing for spring break trips...

I travel a lot - for my work as a travel writer, and for (a lot of) fun - yet, sadly, I am the worst about carrying on my suitcase. I always remember the benefits of doing so when it’s too late, and I am waiting for 35-40 minutes at LAX baggage claim when I wish I were on my way home.

In addition to the tricks mentioned in this episode (i.e. rolling your clothes, using Eagle Creek Pack-It™ Packers, Ziplocs®, and Stephanie Johnson cosmetic bags), another way to save time and space on trips is to send your luggage ahead, using services like Luggage Free, The Luggage Club, or Baggage Quest.

You can also often rent or borrow things you might need at your destination. And you can always buy whatever you forgot (great – just what you needed – another excuse to shop!)

As a very frequent traveler, I have gotten a bit manic about the most effective packing. And this from a "just in case packer!" "I know we are going to Sri Lanka, but we might get invited to go skiing somewhere!!" Anyway... I do a post trip analysis of the "pack". What did I wear, what didn't I wear and make notes of how much I actually need to bring with me the next time. Also... I sometimes pack in a soft-sided bag. And, I pack a second one. I layer my items in the suitcase by outfit and n the order I think I will wear them. The "used" outfits go into the second soft-sided bag!

I JUST started rolling my clothes on my latest trip. And it's true -- you can fit way more in your suitcase! Also, LOVE this website.
