SPRINGTIME FOR STEVE'S | Blog Post |

May 23, 2012

Remember the mix-in madness caused by Steve's Ice Cream of yore? Well, Steve's is back - minus the marble slab - and better than ever.

Last Sunday, following an NYC rooftop foodie excursion (Rosé + charcuterie & cheese spread for me, bratwurst & beer for my friend-- at Eataly's Beer Garden, Birreria, in NYC), I was in need of something sweet and couldn't bear the gelato line inside Eataly. Luckily, Madison Square Park Eats is a food-truck-esque menagerie of gourmet stands that's just outside the door, and I only had to go about six deep -- past preztels and tamales and pizza that was hard to resist -- to come upon "Steve's Ice Cream." Could it be, I thought? I mean, you couldn't just take the name of the original (which was often the reason to venture down into the Galleria in Dallas, TX, circa 1980, ice skating rink level, to watch your Heath Bar get mixed into your chocolate ice cream, ready to relieve you from the 101 degree day outside), could you?

If you were David Stein, one of the original empoyees of the Steve's Ice Cream started in Somerville, MA all those years ago, you could.

I learned from the cute staff at the stand -- as they scooped a beautiful mass of Salted Caramel and something called "Brooklyn Blackout" (which the website describes as: milk chocolate ice cream swirled with Ovenly’s chocolate stout cake pieces and dark chocolate pudding) -- that Stein acquired the brand in 2009, and now it's based in Brooklyn and is "reviving the revolution."

Except, here's how the new Steve's is doing so , which I believe is perfect for a new generation of ice cream aficionados:

"Today’s revolution is where craft meets simple, yet striking, combinations of pure and natural – and where possible, local – ingredients. Our craft goes deeper than flavors, down to the very bases.  Our dairy is local, sustainable and delicious.  Our coconut crème is rich and velvety smooth.  And our frozen ’buch is as sprightly and effervescent as the kombucha we use to craft it."

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!

All hail Steve's!
